Co-leaders of the WP: Objectives: Paragraph 6.2.3 of the call specifies that one of the objectives of the latter is to "identify the social, political, economic, legal and cultural factors in Europe conducive (…) to the practice of socially deviant behaviours". This is the object of WP2, Factors of deviant behaviours, which will attempt to discover factors conducive to deviant and delinquent behaviours through historical and geographic comparison between European countries and possibly also between regions within a same country. Assessing the possible relevance of class, ethnicity/race, gender, age and location will obviously be an integral part of this workpackage.
Scientific responsibility for this workpackage is assigned to Dr. Laurent Mucchielli (CESDIP-CNRS, France) and Prof. Pieter Spierenburg (Erasmus Universiteit, Rotterdam, the Netherlands). They will be assisted by a number of well-known specialists in these questions, who will be in charge of organising work on the different focuses.
- The WP will hold a series of workshops.
Five aspects of deviant and criminal behaviour have been chosen for their quantitative and qualitative importance in Europe, and the concerns or fears they elicit. They are: property offences (Dr. Renée Zauberman, CESDIP-CNRS, France; Prof. Xavier Rousseaux, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium); violent offences (Dr. Laurent Mucchielli and Prof. Pieter Spierenburg); illicit substance abuse (Prof. Dominique Duprez, Université Lille 1, France); disorders and offences connected with conflicts between social or community groups or between those groups and governmental authorities (Prof. Didier Lapeyronnie, Université Victor Segalen, Bordeaux, France); School disorders and violence (Prof. Maryse Esterle-Hedibel and Prof. Cécile Carra, CESDIP-CNRS, France). The sixth, more horizontal heading, on delinquent paths and careers, will set these various dimensions of deviance and crime in perspective (Prof. Stephen Farral, Keele University, UK; Prof. Paul Ponsaers, Ghent University, Belgium; Prof. Gorazd Meško, Univ. of Maribor, Slovenia).
